As Oksana grows up, goes to college, falls in love and continues getting herself into trouble, as her grandmother retires back to Ukraine, her father gets a job at Goldman Sachs, and her mother knits endless scarves, Oksana's longing for a Russia she never really knew looms large in her imagination, mostly through the great Russian literary masters. At the center of the novel is Oksana's relationship with her life-loving, flamboyant grandmother, which deepens by the novel's end as Oksana visits her in Kiev and comes to a new understanding of how to embrace life and love without causing harm to the people dearest to her though will Oksana ever quite learn to behave?
